In the case of my 2014 Fiesta, the brake lights are also knocked out, so while I can get it in Drive by pressing the override with a screwdriver, the car is not road safe. I've had this problem four times now, the first fix was about $500 (diagnostics, switch replacement), then a week later it happened again - only $150 labour that time.

9. Broken Teeth on Reverse Gear (Manual) It’s possible for the Reverse gear to break. While it’s not as common as some other options, you don’t want to overlook the possibility. Wear and tear is the most common cause of gear breakage. When this happens, the car will go in every other gear without problems but cannot be put into Reverse.
Gear stick needs extra pressure on the lift up and down to get into reverse. If changing from 5th down, the gear stick like in other gears doesnt return to the kind off neutral point without an extra pull to the left and down extra. Not massive force but cant see whats worn out etc, without dismantling.
With the pin removed, reassemble the shaft into the selector mechanism components and select a bolt that has a snug fit for the hole. You may need to cut the bolt length down so that it doesn't interfere with the motion of the mechanism. Use a nyloc nut on the end of the bolt.

So, a new shifter mechanism is in your future. If it’s just a broken spring, then you will probably have to go to a hardware store and purchase several springs of the same
